The South African Mint, one of the oldest mints in the world, manufactures these beloved silver coins. The SA Mint released the first-ever Silver Krugerrands in 2017 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand – first minted in 1967.
The obverse of the coin features Otto Schultz’s design of President Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900. Kruger played an important role in the movement to restore the South African Republic’s independence. This goal was achieved in 1884 when Britain recognised the South African Republic as a fully independent state. Surrounding Paul Kruger’s left-facing profile on the obverse is the inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA”.
On the coin’s reverse is the National Animal of South Africa, the springbok antelope.
